Sunday School and Church Services

We want to make various changes, in the summer, to the way we run Sunday School and to the main 10 am service, so that they become more welcoming to families with children and especially to people who are less familiar with church services.

What happens at the moment?
On the first Sunday in the month everyone comes together in church for the whole service. This is an easy to understand, modern service with opportunities to join in. The other Sundays, the children start with Sunday School in the hall and then join us for the later part of the service. Not all our children are happy to be out of sight of their parents – so either the parents have to go with them to the hall and miss the early part of the service or the children stay in church for a service that was not planned with them in mind.

Planned changes.
From mid July we will move the Sunday School activities from the hall to the back of church.  We hope this will make the children’s material readily accessible to the ones who feel uneasy about leaving their parents.  It will allow all generations to take part in the service for longer if they wish to.  Also we will be continuing to experiment with making greater proportions of the 10 am services more interesting for children.

Noise in Church?
Quite understandably, a number of parents feel a little nervous about their children making noise in church. Even in Jesus’ day the disciples tried to keep the children away when their parents brought them to him to bless. (Matthew’s Gospel ch.19 v 13)  Jesus rebuked the disciples and welcomed the children.  We want to be like Jesus, welcoming all people of all ages and abilities. At times, that means there will be extra noise during a service but that everyone, whatever stage of life they are in, will be blessed as they come to meet the Lord together.

I hope you find the changes help, please do
comment on how you find them.

Best wishes in Jesus,
